Let’s plan your trip

Saadani National Park is a unique protected area situated in the eastern part of Tanzania, just a few kilometers from the Indian Ocean. It covers a total area of approximately 1,100 square kilometers and encompasses a variety of ecosystems, ranging from savannah grasslands and acacia woodlands to mangrove swamps and coastal forests. This diversity of habitats supports an impressive array of wildlife, including elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, lions, leopards, and various species of primates and antelopes.

What sets Saadani apart from other national parks in Tanzania is its location, which allows visitors to enjoy both game drives and beach activities in the same day. The park’s coastline stretches for more than 20 kilometers and boasts some of the most beautiful and secluded beaches in the country. Visitors can relax on the white sandy beaches, swim in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, or take part in water sports such as snorkeling, diving, and fishing.

Saadani is also an important breeding ground for green turtles, which come to lay their eggs on the beaches between June and August. The park is committed to conservation efforts, and visitors can learn about the ongoing projects aimed at protecting the local wildlife and ecosystems.

Things to do

Game Drives

Saadani National Park is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including some of the iconic “big five” animals such as lions, leopards, and elephants. Visitors can take part in guided game drives to explore the park’s vast savannah plains and acacia woodlands in search of these magnificent creatures. The best time for game drives is early in the morning or late in the afternoon when animals are most active.

Boat Safaris

One of the unique activities that Saadani National Park offers is boat safaris along the Wami River. These guided excursions allow visitors to spot hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of bird species that are difficult to see during game drives. The boat safaris usually take place during the day and offer a different perspective on the park’s diverse ecosystems.

Beach Activities

Saadani’s coastline is one of the park’s main attractions, and visitors can enjoy a variety of beach activities, such as swimming, sunbathing, and beach walks. The park also offers water sports such as snorkeling, diving, and fishing, which allow visitors to explore the rich marine life of the Indian Ocean.

Turtle Watching

Between June and August, green turtles come to lay their eggs on the beaches of Saadani National Park. Visitors can take part in guided turtle watching tours, which allow them to witness this amazing natural phenomenon and learn about the conservation efforts aimed at protecting these endangered species.

Cultural Tours

Saadani National Park is situated in an area with a rich cultural heritage, and visitors can take part in cultural tours to learn about the local customs and traditions. The tours usually include visits to nearby villages, where visitors can interact with the locals, see traditional dances, and learn about the local cuisine.

When to visit?

The best time to visit Saadani National Park is during the dry season, which runs from June to October. During this period, the vegetation is less dense, making it easier to spot wildlife. The dry season is also the best time for beach activities, as the weather is sunny and warm, and the ocean is calm.

The wet season, which runs from November to May, can be challenging for visitors, as the park’s roads can become muddy and impassable, and the vegetation is thicker, making it harder to spot wildlife. However, the wet season is the best time for bird watching, as many migratory bird species visit the park during this time.

Visitors should also keep in mind that the weather can be unpredictable in Saadani National Park, and it is not uncommon to experience rain even during the dry season. It is always a good idea to bring waterproof clothing and gear, just in case.
