Let’s plan your trip

Tarangire National Park is a unique and mesmerizing wilderness area located in northern Tanzania. The park, which covers an area of about 2,850 square kilometers, is situated in the Manyara Region and is named after the Tarangire River that runs through it. The park is renowned for its incredible wildlife, stunning landscapes, and rich cultural heritage.

Tarangire National Park is an essential part of Tanzania’s Northern Safari Circuit, which includes other famous destinations such as the Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and Lake Manyara National Park. The park is easily accessible from Arusha and can be visited as a day trip or as part of a more extended safari itinerary.

Wildlife in Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park is home to a diverse range of wildlife species, making it one of the most impressive wildlife viewing destinations in Tanzania. The park is especially famous for its large elephant herds, which are some of the biggest in Africa. Visitors can also see other mammals such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffalos, zebras, and giraffes. The park is also home to over 550 bird species, making it a birdwatcher’s paradise.

One of the unique features of Tarangire National Park is the large baobab trees that dot the landscape. The trees provide shade and food for the animals, and their unusual shape and size make them a popular photography subject.

Things to do

There are several activities to enjoy while in Tarangire National Park. One of the most popular is a game drive, which offers an opportunity to see the park’s wildlife up close. Visitors can take a guided tour with a knowledgeable safari guide who will help them spot the animals and provide information about their behavior and habitats.

Another exciting activity is a walking safari, which allows visitors to explore the park on foot. Walking safaris are usually led by experienced guides and are an excellent way to learn about the smaller wildlife and plants that are often missed on a game drive.

For those interested in culture, a visit to a local Maasai village is a must-do activity. The Maasai people are a semi-nomadic tribe that has lived in the area for centuries. Visitors can learn about their way of life, customs, and traditions and purchase souvenirs from the local artisans.

When to visit?

The best time to visit Tarangire National Park is during the dry season, which runs from June to October. During this time, the vegetation is sparse, making it easier to spot wildlife. The animals also tend to gather around the Tarangire River, which is the only source of water in the park during the dry season.

However, visitors should be aware that the dry season is also the busiest time in the park, and accommodations and activities can book up quickly. For those who prefer a quieter experience, the wet season (November to May) can be an excellent time to visit, as the park is less crowded, and the landscape is lush and green.
